Sarah Richards, MA is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Colorado. She studied international disaster psychology at the University of Denver and holds a master’s degree. Sarah’s clinical training has primarily been with children who have experienced trauma and childhood adversity. Much of her work has focused on childhood bereavement and how to support grieving children. She uses a trauma-informed care lens to support her clients and meets them where they are. She has experience working with people of all ages.  She utilizes individual therapy, play therapy, family therapy, couples therapy, and group therapy.

Sarah strives to be culturally competent by applying the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) meaning of the term, “…the ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures,” and referring to culture as “… a term that goes beyond just race or ethnicity. It can also refer to such characteristics as age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion, income level, education, geographical location, or profession” (SAMHSA, 2016). She believes this is especially important to keep in mind when working with children and adolescents who are discovering themselves and the effects of the world around them.

During her time at the University of Denver, Sarah had the opportunity to work in Johannesburg, South Africa with survivors of trauma and torture. This experience has given her a unique perspective to mental health counseling and the experiences of people from a variety of cultures. This widened her knowledge of interventions and ways to support people experiencing a wide range of needs.

She believes our childhood experiences has an affect on all of us and that creating solid attachments is a a fundamental skill.  Not only to be learned in childhood but to also continue to grow and expand over the life-pan.  While our past plays a role Sarah believes it is crucial to be able to learn coping skills and distress tolerance to handle current stressors.
